Romantic escape on the Amalfi Coast: must-see places

If your idea of a romantic escape to the Amalfi Coast coincides with kissing in front of breathtaking sunsets, walking hand in hand along paths overlooking unforgettable views, and romantic candlelit dinners in small restaurants by the sea, this article is just what you’ve been looking for.

Let’s start with this premise: telling someone ‘I’m taking you to the Amalfi Coast’ is a love declaration in itself, because it is really hard to think of a more romantic place than this.

To share the beauty of a fiery red sunset in Praiano, to glimpse from the sea the small houses of Positano, leaning against each other, to walk along secret paths or villages where time seems to stand still, to enjoy the slowness of a simple coffee overlooking the sea: these are small experiences of pleasure that alone fit the concept of a ‘romantic getaway’.

But since lovers are demanding, because, in the words of Shakespeare, they are “like madmen, with brains so excitable and imaginations so fertile, that they see far more things than cold reason can explain”, in this article we will go a little deeper and pinpoint the most beautiful places for a truly unforgettable couple experience.

As always, there will be some dispassionate advice to make your romantic getaway on the Amalfi Coast truly impeccable.

What is the best time to organise a romantic getaway on the Amalfi Coast?

Let’s start with the basics: the time of year.

As is well known, the Amalfi Coast is one of the most popular travel destinations, both in Italy and abroad.

During the summer period and on weekends from April to October, some towns on the Coast are literally taken by storm by travellers and tourists. This generally leads to two other problems: the difficulty of finding parking and the likelihood of getting literally stuck in traffic on the State Road 163 Amalfitana.

If we had to recommend a truly perfect time to organise a quiet and serene romantic weekend, our choice would undoubtedly fall on spring and autumn, because these are the times of year when tourist flows are reduced and the Amalfi Coast can be enjoyed at its most beautiful and authentic.

Moreover, in spring and autumn the climate is really pleasant: it is not excessively hot and nature, at the peak of its splendour, embellishes the landscape, already splendid for that brilliant and intense blue of sea and sky that characterises these seasons.

The only downside is the possibility of sudden downpours or a few days of uncertain weather.

If you decide to travel in high season, we recommend destinations other than Positano and Amalfi, which are the most crowded and chaotic towns on the Coast at that time.

If, on the other hand, we are talking about travelling, the general advice is to travel by sea or by road. Please note that if you decide to oranise your romantic trip in autumn or spring, you will also have an easier time getting around by car. Having said that, let’s set off to discover the must-see places to make your romantic getaway on the Amalfi Coast truly unique!

A sea-view kiss on the Terrace of Infinity

Not far from the square in Ravello, walking about ten minutes and taking a few steps, you reach Villa Cimbrone.

The Villa is actually a five-star hotel whose gardens can be visited and, trust me, it’s worth it! Take your other half by the hand and get lost together in its marvellous gardens: walk along the Avenue of Infinity, under a romantic pergola of wisteria and, finally, look out from the Terrace of Infinity: from here you can see, suspended between the sky and the sea, the whole of the Amalfi Coast, losing yourself in a breathtaking blue that almost makes you dizzy!

This is a great opportunity to take some romantic photos.

One suggestion: in a location like this even a marriage proposal has its place!

The walk of love in Furore

The town of Furore, famous for its suggestive Fiordo, hides other surprises. In fact, we call this village the ‘Paese che non c’è’ (‘Neverland’), precisely because in Furore there is no real town, but groups of houses that seem to get lost in the Mediterranean maquis. Some very interesting paths for hiking enthusiasts start from here.

There is even one suitable for those seeking a romantic getaway: it is called the ‘Walk of Love’.

It is a short, easy walk that starts at the Church of Sant’Elia, in the Cicala district. At the start of the path you will find a statue of two lovers and along the way, plaques with phrases praising love.

All made even more special by the splendid view from the path, some 500 metres above sea level.

The perfect sunset? In Praiano!

What could be more romantic than a sunset?

If you are looking for the perfect destination to enjoy a moment of pure beauty during your romantic getaway on the Amalfi Coast, you have just found it: it is the town of Praiano!

Here, in addition to having a few sea-view venues that offer a crazy view at sunset time, while you sip a drink with your other half, you can also take advantage of the splendid majolica-tiled square in front of the Church of San Gennaro: from here you can enjoy a sublime sunset and take a few beautiful photos to immortalise a beautiful moment shared with the person you love.

Destination Positano: heart-stopping ideas

Romantic getaway on the Amalfi Coast

It may be its characteristic vertical conformation, with colourful little houses clustered next to each other, it may be its narrow streets and characteristic stairways to be followed to reach the beach and the clubs, it may be the light and glamorous atmosphere that characterises it, especially in spring and summer, but Positano is considered one of the most romantic destinations ever.

To make your romantic getaway to the Amalfi Coast truly special, you could organise a seaside dinner in Positano itself.

The truly unbeatable alternative, in our opinion, is to organise a boat trip and reach Positano along the entire coastline. In addition to the advantage of enjoying the Amalfi Coast from a different perspective, you can take advantage of this to find a more secluded beach for a break.

You can stop at some of the seaside restaurants you find along the way and finally land in Positano, to enjoy the spectacle of this splendid village seen from the sea.

If you want more information, we leave you the link to our guide to organising an unforgettable day by boat!

An alternative to the itinerary by sea is a visit to the hamlet of Nocelle, a rural village about 500 metres above sea level, which offers a spectacular view of Positano.

The hamlet is connected to the centre of Positano by public transport.

Two beaches dedicated to lovers in Amalfi and Cetara

If you have decided to organise your romantic getaway to the Amalfi Coast during the summer and are looking for less crowded beaches where you can find some intimacy, we recommend two that seem just perfect for the occasion.

The first is the Spiaggia degli Innamorati (Lovers’ Beach) in Cetara: its romantic name derives from the small size of this beach, just six metres long.

This intimate and sheltered handkerchief of sand and pebbles can only be reached by sea, even with a pedalo, as the distance to the harbour beach is only 170 metres.

If you are lucky enough to find it free, it is well worth taking advantage of it: the name is really apt.

The second beach we recommend is Santa Croce beach, in Amalfi. In this case, we do not recommend it for reasons of intimacy, but for its beautiful natural arch, known as the ‘Lovers’ Arch’: according to tradition, couples must exchange a kiss as a pledge of love when they pass under it.

This beach can also be reached from the mainland, via a long descent of no less than 364 steps from the main road.

Final tips for your romantic getaway on the Amalfi Coast

We have already mentioned the difficulty of our roads and advised you to use public transport.

However, if you are looking for a romantic alternative to travelling by bus or ferry, you may want to consider getting around on two wheels: as well as having greater autonomy in getting around, you will be able to enjoy the unique experience of literally enjoying the Amalfi Coast on your skin.

The views that open up before your eyes as you travel along the SS163 take your breath away: they are a real balm for the heart.

Sharing them with a loved one is, in our opinion, an experience to put on the list of things to do at least once in a lifetime.
