🗓️ Events not to be missed
✅ The festival dedicated to Saint Andrew, the patron saint of Amalfi
Taking part in the Feast of Saint Andrew in Amalfi is an experience that goes far beyond a simple religious celebration: as is often the case with local religious events, it plunges you into the culture, history and deepest emotions of the Amalfi community.
The patron saint is honoured twice a year: on 27 June, in memory of the miracle of 1544, when Saint Andrew saved the city from a Saracen invasion by unleashing a providential storm; and on 30 November, the liturgical date of his death.
During these days, Amalfi is transformed into a vibrant stage of faith and tradition. The most exciting moment is the solemn procession: the silver statue of the saint, carried on the shoulders of the faithful dressed in red, travels through the streets of the historic centre until it reaches the beach of Marina Grande, where the blessing of the sea takes place.
The climax is the spectacular “race” up the steps of the cathedral: amid applause and emotion, the bearers run up the 62 steps of the cathedral, accompanied by the notes of Rossini's “Mosè in Egitto”.
If you are lucky enough to witness this festival, you will experience a unique moment, where spirituality blends with the scenic beauty of Amalfi, not to mention the fireworks display that concludes the day of celebration, lighting up the night sky above the town.
✅ Byzantine New Year
Every year, between 31 August and 1 September, Amalfi and Atrani are transformed into a fascinating medieval theatre to celebrate the Byzantine New Year. This historical re-enactment commemorates the beginning of the fiscal and legal year of the Byzantine Empire, a period when Amalfi was a thriving maritime republic.
During the event, the streets come alive with parades in historical costumes, colourful flags and traditional music. The highlight is the investiture of the “Magister di Civiltà Amalfitana”, an honorary title awarded to personalities who have contributed significantly to the culture and history of the region.
The ceremony takes place in the church of San Salvatore de' Birecto in Atrani, followed by a public presentation in Piazza Duomo in Amalfi.
Taking part in the Byzantine New Year will immerse you in a unique experience that combines history, culture and entertainment.
✅ The Historical Regatta
Every four years, Amalfi returns to the spotlight of history with the Historical Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics, a spectacular event celebrating the city's glorious maritime past.
Together with Pisa, Genoa and Venice, Amalfi takes part in this fascinating historical re-enactment that combines sport, tradition and pride in identity.
The event takes place in rotation between the four Ancient Republics, but when it is Amalfi's turn, the city is transformed into an authentic open-air theatre, with medieval costume parades, banners, drums and galleons reconstructed with philological accuracy.
The heart of the festival is the actual race: a competition between crews from the four cities, who compete aboard historic boats along a 2,000-metre course. But the regatta is only part of the show: the historical parade that precedes the race is an exciting journey through time, with hundreds of participants re-enacting legendary episodes and characters from the maritime republics.
From 15 to 18 May 2025, the 70th edition of the Regata Storica was held in Amalfi.
