🗓️ Events not to be missed
✅ Byzantine New Year
Every year, between the end of August and the beginning of September, Amalfi is transported back in time to become a fascinating historical stage thanks to the Byzantine New Year, a unique celebration that recalls the city's glorious past during the Amalfi Ducate.
This event is not just a festive occasion, but an authentic immersion in the Middle Ages, when Amalfi was a commercial power in the Mediterranean and enjoyed privileges and direct relations with the Byzantine Empire.
The climax?
The historical re-enactment of the appointment of the Magister Civitatum, a central figure in the political and administrative management of the maritime republic.
Costume parades, ancient music, travelling shows and historical re-enactments fill the streets of the town centre, transforming Amalfi into an open-air film set. The squares come alive with knights, ladies, archers, merchants and artisans. It is the perfect opportunity to experience the town in a new way, breathing in the atmosphere of a distant era that is still deeply rooted in the local identity.
📣 If you are staying in Amalfi during this period, get ready to discover a different and fascinating side of the city: every corner tells a story, every detail is carefully crafted to take you back in time.
✅ Historical Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics: adrenaline and tradition on the sea
One of the most spectacular events on the entire Amalfi Coast is undoubtedly the Historical Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics, which takes place every four years in Amalfi, alternating with Pisa, Genoa and Venice.
It is much more than a rowing race: it is a popular festival, a celebration of historical identity that evokes the glory of the Italian maritime republics.
For the occasion, the seafront comes alive with enthusiasm, flags and folklore, transforming Amalfi into a meeting point for sport, history and entertainment.
The event is divided into two main parts: the actual regatta, a competition between four colourful galleons, each representing a maritime republic; and the historical parade, an impressive costume parade involving hundreds of participants, including ladies, nobles, ambassadors and knights, in carefully recreated historical costumes.
Watching the regatta from the pier or from a private boat is a unique experience: you can see the galleons cutting through the waves with power and grace, while the crowd on the seafront applauds and cheers passionately. The event is free and open to all, but if you want to enjoy the experience to the fullest, we recommend arriving early to find a good spot with a view of the sea.
If you stay at the Hotel Residence, you are in the heart of the action: in just a few steps you are on the seafront, ready to experience one of the most iconic events of the Amalfi summer.
✅ Feast of St. Andrew: faith, folklore and fireworks
The Feast of Saint Andrew is the most heartfelt event in Amalfi, a religious and popular celebration held twice a year, on 27 June and 30 November. On both dates, the town is decked out to honour its patron saint, the apostle Andrew, whose relics are kept in the cathedral.
But it is the summer celebration that offers the most spectacular moments, with an explosive mixture of faith, tradition and street parties. The most eagerly expected moment is the solemn procession, which begins inside the cathedral and winds its way through the historic centre to the seafront.
Hundreds of faithful accompany the statue of Saint Andrew with songs and prayers. But the climax of the emotion is reached when, in a now legendary gesture, the bearers run up the long steps of the cathedral with the heavy statue on their shoulders, amid the applause and tears of the crowd.
In the evening, the sky above Amalfi lights up with a breathtaking fireworks display, which is reflected on the sea and provides a breathtaking finale.
All around, music, stalls and the aroma of traditional dishes create a convivial and festive atmosphere. Taking part in the Feast of St. Andrew is an experience that touches the heart, even for those who are not religious: it is the most authentic way to get in touch with the deepest soul of Amalfi, made up of devotion, pride and community.
