🗺️ Things to see on your doorstep
Staying at the Hotel Savoia, just a stone's throw from these three extraordinary places, you can combine the beauty of Roman and medieval history, spirituality and Renaissance art, and the magic of the Mediterranean Sea, all within a few metres!
📍 MAR Positano – Roman Archaeological Museum: a dive into thousands of years of history
A few steps from the Hotel Savoia, behind the majestic bell tower of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, is the surprising MAR Positano: the Roman Archaeological Museum. Opened in 2018, a magnificent 1st-century Roman villa has been brought to light here, with mosaic floors and vivid frescoes from distant times.
The rooms are lit by a glass walkway, allowing visitors to “touch” the remains of the triclinium, the banquet hall, creating a magical atmosphere suspended between past and present.
You can also explore the crypts: the upper one, adjacent to the Roman finds, and the medieval one under the presbytery, a combination of sacred architecture and funerary utility.
A recommended visit lasts about 30 minutes, accompanied by enthusiastic guides or exploring freely with audio guides. It is an experience that enriches your holiday with a deep immersion in the history of the Amalfi Coast.
The ticket price is €15. Given the large crowds in Positano, especially at weekends and during the summer, we recommend booking in advance.
📍 Church of Santa Maria Assunta
Right in front of the museum, in the heart of Positano, stands the famous Church of Santa Maria Assunta, with its iconic yellow, green and blue majolica dome shining under the Mediterranean sun.
Dating back to the 10th century and built on the ruins of an ancient Benedictine abbey, it houses an artistic treasure of great importance, including the ancient Byzantine icon of the Black Madonna, the subject of a fascinating legend: a ship, exhausted by the doldrums, was saved only after “resting” the statue of the Virgin in these waters, hence the name Positano.
The interior, in neoclassical style and restored in the 18th century, is striking with its carved cherubs, side chapels rich in works of art such as Fabrizio Santafede's “Circoncisione” (Circumcision), and a mystical atmosphere suspended between sacredness and beauty.
The lively and colourful square in front of the church is the ideal place to take memorable photos or simply enjoy the energy of the village, with free admission and long opening hours, perfect for a break just after checking in at the Hotel Savoia.
📍 Marina Grande Beach
Another panoramic gem just a stone's throw from the hotel is Marina Grande Beach, the beating heart of the village.
This stretch of sandy coastline overlooking the crystal-clear sea offers spectacular views of the pastel-coloured houses perched in a semicircle, with the dome of Santa Maria Assunta dominating the scene The beach is equipped with facilities, bars and restaurants, while the pier connects Positano to enchanting destinations such as Capri, Amalfi, Sorrento and, in the summer months, Ischia.
It is perfect for a swim, a moment of relaxation in the shade of a beach umbrella or a boat trip to secret islands and coves. Furthermore, it is easily accessible on foot via Via dei Mulini or by sea, making Marina Grande the ideal starting point for exploring the coast or enjoying the sea in complete freedom.
