🗺️ Things to see on your doorstep

Staying at the Hotel Savoia, just a stone's throw from these three extraordinary places, you can combine the beauty of Roman and medieval history, spirituality and Renaissance art, and the magic of the Mediterranean Sea, all within a few metres!

📍 MAR Positano – Roman Archaeological Museum: a dive into thousands of years of history

A few steps from the Hotel Savoia, behind the majestic bell tower of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, is the surprising MAR Positano: the Roman Archaeological Museum. Opened in 2018, a magnificent 1st-century Roman villa has been brought to light here, with mosaic floors and vivid frescoes from distant times.
The rooms are lit by a glass walkway, allowing visitors to “touch” the remains of the triclinium, the banquet hall, creating a magical atmosphere suspended between past and present.

You can also explore the crypts: the upper one, adjacent to the Roman finds, and the medieval one under the presbytery, a combination of sacred architecture and funerary utility.
A recommended visit lasts about 30 minutes, accompanied by enthusiastic guides or exploring freely with audio guides. It is an experience that enriches your holiday with a deep immersion in the history of the Amalfi Coast.

The ticket price is €15. Given the large crowds in Positano, especially at weekends and during the summer, we recommend booking in advance.

📍 Church of Santa Maria Assunta

Right in front of the museum, in the heart of Positano, stands the famous Church of Santa Maria Assunta, with its iconic yellow, green and blue majolica dome shining under the Mediterranean sun.
Dating back to the 10th century and built on the ruins of an ancient Benedictine abbey, it houses an artistic treasure of great importance, including the ancient Byzantine icon of the Black Madonna, the subject of a fascinating legend: a ship, exhausted by the doldrums, was saved only after “resting” the statue of the Virgin in these waters, hence the name Positano.

The interior, in neoclassical style and restored in the 18th century, is striking with its carved cherubs, side chapels rich in works of art such as Fabrizio Santafede's “Circoncisione” (Circumcision), and a mystical atmosphere suspended between sacredness and beauty.
The lively and colourful square in front of the church is the ideal place to take memorable photos or simply enjoy the energy of the village, with free admission and long opening hours, perfect for a break just after checking in at the Hotel Savoia.

📍 Marina Grande Beach

Another panoramic gem just a stone's throw from the hotel is Marina Grande Beach, the beating heart of the village.
This stretch of sandy coastline overlooking the crystal-clear sea offers spectacular views of the pastel-coloured houses perched in a semicircle, with the dome of Santa Maria Assunta dominating the scene The beach is equipped with facilities, bars and restaurants, while the pier connects Positano to enchanting destinations such as Capri, Amalfi, Sorrento and, in the summer months, Ischia.

It is perfect for a swim, a moment of relaxation in the shade of a beach umbrella or a boat trip to secret islands and coves. Furthermore, it is easily accessible on foot via Via dei Mulini or by sea, making Marina Grande the ideal starting point for exploring the coast or enjoying the sea in complete freedom.

🗓️ Events not to be missed

✅ Feast of the Madonna dell'Assunta
In the heart of summer, on 15 August, Positano is filled with spirituality and beauty to celebrate the Madonna dell'Assunta, protector of the village and central figure of local devotion. The festival, one of the most heartfelt on the Amalfi Coast, is much more than a religious event: it is a profound re-enactment of the maritime legend that binds the community indissolubly to its Madonna. According to legend, a Byzantine ship, stranded in the bay, miraculously set sail again only after leaving the icon of the Virgin Mary as a gift to the inhabitants.

The celebrations begin on 5 August with the ritual of the “Esce à Maronna”, in which the statue is solemnly carried from the chapel of Santo Stefano to its throne in the Mother Church.

The highlight is on 15 August, when, after evening mass, the evocative procession takes place on the beach. At midnight, a magical fireworks display lights up the sea of Positano, while the local band plays symphonic music, bringing this festival of soul and tradition to a beautiful close.

✅ Luminarie di San Domenico, in nearby Praiano
The nearby town of Praiano celebrates a unique event every year that is deeply rooted in its identity: the Luminaria di San Domenico, a tradition that takes place from 1 to 4 August at the Convent of Santa Maria a Castro, dating back to 1599, where devotion to San Domenico is kept alive, introduced in 1606 by Dominican friars from the Sanità district of Naples.

The symbolic heart of the event is linked to a fascinating legend: it is said that the mother of Saint Dominic, shortly before giving birth to him, dreamed of a dog with a lit torch in its mouth setting the world on fire. A prophetic image symbolising the spread of the Word of God through the work of the future saint.
The festival is preceded by three days of spiritual preparation, during which an extraordinary visual event comes to life.

The houses, narrow streets, windows, terraces and even the domes of Praiano are lit up with small wax lights, creating a magical and timeless atmosphere. The highlight is Piazza San Gennaro, which every evening is transformed into an ocean of light with over three thousand candles, carefully arranged in artistic compositions.

Since 2001, thanks to the intervention of set designer Gennaro Amendola, the Luminaria di San Domenico has been given a new lease of life, becoming the main cultural initiative of the municipality of Praiano. Today, it is not only a religious celebration but also an artistic event that we recommend you do not miss, as we are sure you will be captivated by the evocative power of the light that illuminates the night and the heart of an entire village.

✅ An aperitif at Franco's Bar
Franco's Bar, located inside the historic and luxurious Hotel Le Sirenuse, is not just a bar, but an institution in Positano. It is the ideal place for an aperitif at sunset, a moment when the sky is tinged with shades of orange and pink, reflecting on the waters below. The service is impeccable, the cocktails are expertly prepared using high-quality ingredients and an almost obsessive attention to detail. Don't expect a noisy or chaotic place, but a haven of sophisticated tranquillity, perfect for intimate conversations or enjoying the pure pleasure of the moment. Each drink is a work of art, presented with elegance, and the surrounding environment, with its refined furnishings and attention to music, contributes to creating a multi-sensory experience that satisfies all the senses.
