🗺️ Things to see on your doorstep
📍 The historic centre of Positano
The historic centre of Positano is a magical maze of narrow streets, alleys and steps that climb between pastel-coloured houses, offering picturesque views at every turn. It is the beating heart of the vertical village, a fascinating maze to explore on foot, without rushing, to savour the authentic atmosphere of this pearl of the Amalfi Coast. Along the way, you will find artisan shops selling custom-made sandals, handmade ceramics and beachwear, small treasure troves of local creativity immersed in a succession of steps and breathtaking views.
Among the unmissable sights is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, with its majolica dome covered in colourful tiles: a visual symbol recognisable from afar, which embellishes the central square on the hill, overlooking the blue sea below. As you stroll along, you will lose yourself in charming alleys lined with boutiques, galleries and elegant cafés: every corner looks like a living postcard, where the scent of lemons and salt air mingles with the liveliness of artisan workshops.
In the evening, the centre is transformed: the lights dim, the streets come alive with a soft glow, and walking under the starry sky amid Mediterranean scents becomes an intimate and romantic experience.
📍 The MAR Museum
Created thanks to patient excavation and restoration work, the MAR is a genuine window onto a magnificent past: a frescoed triclinium dating back to the 1st century AD covers an area of approximately 30 square metres, revealing vivid colours and lively motifs in the Fourth Pompeian Style, which have remained intact for 2000 years.
The tour continues in the two overlapping crypts: the upper crypt, built in the 17th century and still standing today, houses 69 brick funeral drains, used to accelerate the decomposition of bodies – a unique example of historical funerary architecture on the Amalfi Coast.
Descending into the medieval crypt, you can sense the evolution of the place: columns, arches and naves tell of a religious past mixed with ancient funerary practices, reconstructing a layered dialogue between eras and cultures.
A visit to the MAR immerses you in a surprising architectural and historical narrative: from the evocative power of the frescoes to the silent rigour of the underground spaces, every room conveys the importance of Positano in ancient times, when the “villa d'ozio” was chosen by the Roman elite as a place to retreat and enjoy their free time in breathtaking surroundings.
The museum is open from April to October with flexible opening hours until 9 p.m. (November-March 10 a.m.-4 p.m.) and is located in Piazza Flavio Gioia 7, with a separate ticket office and entrance. It is best to book in advance to guarantee admission and a guided tour at the scheduled time.
📍 Fornillo Beach
Fornillo Beach is one of those places that manages to surprise even those who already know the beauty of Positano. Just 400 metres from Villa Punta del Sole, it can be reached in a few minutes on foot, down a staircase surrounded by greenery or, for those arriving from the centre, along a beautiful panoramic walk that starts from the small port.
The route itself is an experience, with views of the sea and silence interrupted only by the sound of the waves. Compared to the more famous Spiaggia Grande, Fornillo has a more intimate and relaxed atmosphere. It is about 300 metres long and composed of sand mixed with pebbles, with clear waters and shallow waters ideal for swimming in complete tranquillity.
Here, time seems to slow down: the natural setting is protected, the sea is calm, and the colours are those of the authentic Amalfi Coast. It is the perfect choice if you are looking for a day at the beach away from the crowds, immersed in a more authentic and welcoming environment.
The beach offers both free areas and Well-kept beach establishments equipped with sun loungers, parasols, showers and small restaurants overlooking the sea where you can enjoy fresh dishes and refreshing drinks. Among the pebbles and boats pulled ashore, you can breathe in the air of times gone by. In the background, the Torre Trasita, an ancient watchtower, adds a touch of history and drama to the bay.
